Northern Scythe Championships

The Northern Scythe Championships will return in 2020 to Bell Sykes Farm, a different venue, half an hour away from Lower Winskill Farm. It will provide a fresh venue with different species and a thicker sward. Expect more grass and slower times! But just as much fun ! The Northern Scythe Championships 2018...

Thank you very much to all those who attended the Northern Scythe Championships this year in what were challenging conditions. The meadows had not seen rain since the beginning of May in Yorkshire and so the sward was thin and coarse, meaning it was difficult for competitors to keep a keen edge on their blade without stopping to hone with the whetstone and the sun was baking down, building the heat through the afternoon. However, there were still some excellent times recorded and some very high quality mowing. See below for all the results...

Competitors had to mow a 5 x 5m square in the fastest time but also highest quality possible. The quality scores are given out of ten in the right hand column with the times (in minutes and seconds) in the middle

Results from the 2017 Northern Scythe Championships...

The quality of the mowing was excellent and there were some fast times recorded on what was a lovely sward to mow.
